Processions of Candlemas, the Litanies and the Way of the Cross in Ponta do Sol
Original title: Procissão das Candeias, das Ladainhas e da Via Sacra, na Ponta do Sol
Describes the former processions of the Candlemas, the Litanies and the Way of the Cross held in Ponta do Sol, with their routes to local churches and chapels. The Way of the Cross processions outside the church ended around 1830.
The article referred to above records that these processions were formerly held in Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’).
The procession of the Litanies (Ladainhas, a Rogation procession) took place in May. According to a document of 1600, on the first day it went to the church of Our Lady of Pity (Nossa Senhora da Piedade), in Canhas; on the second, to the chapel of Espírito Santo (Holy Spirit), in Lombada (‘long ridge’); and on the third, to the chapel of São Sebastião (St Sebastian), in the town (vila).
In 1607 the Council ordered that on the first day the same procession should go to the chapel of Espírito Santo, on the second to that of Our Lady of Pity (Jangão?) and on the third to that of São Sebastião. The parishioners of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Canhas) and of Madalena do Mar (‘Magdalene by the sea’) were excused from attending the procession, since it was held in their own parishes.
The processions of the Way of the Cross outside the church came to an end, says the author of the article mentioned, around 1830. In the days when they were held, they set out from the parish church and passed through the streets of the town, going as far as the chapel of Our Lady of Deliverance (Nossa Senhora do Livramento), in Lombo das Adegas (‘ridge of the wine cellars’), and the chapel of St Maurus (Santo Amaro), in Lombada. Crosses stood along the streets and paths these processions followed, and on the Caminho da Lombada (‘ridge road’) there is a cave called the furna do Calvário (Calvary cave), which was one of the stations of these processions.
