Pear tree (Pyrus communis, subsp. sativa)

The cultivated pear tree, widely grown in Madeira and also on Porto Santo, with many local fruit varieties.

A European member of the Rosaceae-Pomoideae, widely cultivated in Madeira and also found on the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). Its fruits vary greatly in both shape and flavour. The best known are those usually called by the following names: bergamotas, caniças, condes, flamengas, francesas, carvalhais, de São João, marmelas, formigas, brancas and saramanhas. These last two pears and the caniças are the most sought after for preserves. On Porto Santo only the caniça pear exists.
