Sea urchins

Original title: Ouriços do Mar

Sea urchins of Madeira: about ten species recorded, two abundant in coastal pools but not eaten.

About ten species of these echinoderms have been recorded in Madeira. Two of them – Echinus lividus and E. brevispinosus – live in abundance in the pools near the coast, but they are not used as food. Diadema europaeum, dark purple and armed with long spines, and the small Echinocyamus pusillus also occur in some places. See Echinoderms and Starfish.
