Starfish

Original title: Estrelas do Mar

Describes the starfish and brittle stars found in Madeiran waters, naming several species and their colours.

This name is given to several echinoderms of Madeira, most notably Uraster glacialis, with bluish spines; Ophidiaster attenuatus, red and spineless; Ophiocoma nigra, black in colour; Ophiolepis squamata, small and white; and O. siliata, with rigid spines. This last species is common at depths of 20 to 30 braças. The largest of the starfish is Astropecton aurantiacus, a red Mediterranean species which sometimes reaches a great size.
