Machado (Dr Vicente Cândido)
Original title: Machado (Dr. Vicente Cândido)
Biographical note on Dr Vicente Cândido Machado (1855–1911), a Funchal-born physician and surgeon trained in Paris, famed for a delicate operation on Bishop D. Manuel Agostinho Barreto in 1880 and for a published controversy with the Conde de Canavial.
He was born in Funchal on 3 October 1855 and died in the same city on 23 November 1911. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Paris in 1880. On returning to Madeira, on 2 October of the same year he performed, with complete success, a delicate surgical operation on the late prelate Dom Manuel Agostinho Barreto, which at once earned him great renown as a distinguished physician and surgeon. He defended and published the thesis E'ssai sur les oreillons sous-maxillaires, and in 1884, in a controversy with the Count of Canavial, he published the pamphlet Resposta ao folheto do dr. João da Camara Leme Homem de Vasconcellos. . .
