Machado

On the Machado surname in Madeira, traced by Dr Azevedo to João Machado de Miranda of Guimarães, heir to his uncle Bartolomeu Machado's entailed estate.

Frutuoso refers to the peak of Lopo Machado, above the chapel of Our Lady of the Snows (Nossa Senhora das Neves). Dr Azevedo, however, says that the surname Machado derives from João Machado de Miranda, a native of Guimarães. He came to Madeira at the call of his uncle Bartolomeu Machado, who had no heirs by his wife, Dona Francisca Velosa, and the couple together founded an entail (morgado) from their property in favour of the said nephew’s descendants.
