Judges (juízes de direito)

Original title: Juízes de Direito

Lists the professional judges (juízes de direito) who served in Madeira from the judicial reform of 1835, first in the western and eastern comarcas and, from 1876, in the single comarca of Funchal, later divided into two courts.

Judges (juízes de direito)

1Judges of the western and eastern comarcas (1835–1876)

Professional judges have served in Madeira since 15 October 1835, the day on which the judicial reform decreed on 16 May 1832 came into force on this island. From then until 1876, that is, for as long as the western and eastern comarcas (originally julgados) operated here, the following magistrates came to Funchal, many of whom served in both comarcas:

Domingos Olavo Correia de Azevedo (1835), José Pereira Leite Pita Ortigueira Negrão (1835), Francisco Jerónimo Coelho de Sousa (1838), Francisco Leite Pereira da Costa Bernardes (1846), Dom João Correia Portugal da Silveira (1847), José Afonso Botelha (1849), António Magalhães Mexia Baião de Lança Salema (1852), José Pereira Sanches de Castro (1855), Augusto das Neves Sousa Pimenta (1861), Caetano José Gomes Monteiro (1862), António Bernardo de Amorim de Guerra Quaresma (1863), Francisco José Monteiro Tavares (1869), Cassiano Sepúlveda Teixeira (1869) and Francisco António da Silva Seide.

2Judges of the Funchal comarca (1876–1940)

The present judicial district (comarca) of Funchal was established on 16 November 1876, and the aforementioned Francisco António da Silva Seide, previously district judge (juiz de direito) of the western judicial district, took office as its district judge. Since then the judicial district has had the following judges:

Manuel Celestino Emídio, took office on 23 August 1878. Tertuliano Ciríaco Alves de Araújo, took office on 3 March 1881. Manuel José da Fonseca, took office on 23 May 1887. Joaquim Simões Cantante, took office on 12 February 1893. Fernando Augusto Crisóstomo de Gouveia, took office on 29 March 1899. Manuel de Barros Nobre, took office on 11 November 1899. Manuel Rufino da Graça, took office on 9 March 1905. Manuel Borges de Sousa Teles, took office on 22 August 1911. Domingos José Vieira Ribeiro, took office on 18 February 1918. Francisco Nunes da Costa Torres, took office on 27 November 1919. Arnaldo Fragateiro Pinho Branco, took office on 27 March 1922. Albino António de Almeida Matos, 1923. Félix José da Costa Soto Maior, 1924. Joaquim Crisóstomo da Silveira Júnior, 1925.

As stated in the article Funchal (judicial district), a second court was added to the judicial district of the district capital, so that there came to be two courts, each with its own judges. These posts have been held by Drs Joaquim Crisóstomo da Silveira Júnior (1925), Albano de Gusmão Tavares do Canto Taveira (1929), Pedro de Melo Coutinho de Albuquerque (1929), Luís Afonso Viana de Lemos (1932), Augusto Simões Cantante (1935), António Magalhães Barros Araújo Queirós, Viscount of Cortegaça (1935), Tomás António Bandeira da Gama Pessanha Faria Coutinho Vilhegas do Casal (1938), José Ferreira Machado (1939) and José Pinto Magalhães (1940).
