Little Sisters of the Poor

Original title: Irmãzinhas dos Pobres

The Little Sisters of the Poor, a religious congregation that came to Madeira in 1900 and founded an asylum for the elderly, until their expulsion in 1911.

These nuns came to Madeira in 1900 and at once founded an asylum for the elderly, to which the diocesan prelate Dom Manuel Agostinho Barreto and Father António José de Macedo contributed a great deal, as already mentioned in the article asylums (Asilos), on p. 94 of the 1st volume of this work. With the decree expelling the religious orders from our country, the Little Sisters of the Poor (Irmãzinhas dos Pobres) had to abandon the asylum they had founded. Twelve of them left Madeira on 18 April 1911, bound for the French town of Latour.
