Article Nº 2675 Religious body Vol. III · p. 27
Religious Orders
Original title: Ordens Religiosas
Lists the religious orders established in the Madeira archipelago: the Franciscans, the Jesuits and the Carmelites.
The religious orders that established themselves in this archipelago were the Seraphic or Franciscan order, as can be seen at greater length in the articles Seraphic Order (Ordem Seráfica) and convents (conventos); the order of the Jesuits, to which we have devoted a special article entitled Jesuítas; and the order of the Carmelites, which occupied the hospice (hospício) attached to the church of Carmo (Carmelite church). Of this order we know nothing beyond what we have said in the article devoted to that church.
