Describes the first, unsuccessful attempt by the Funchal Municipal Council, before constitutional government, to found a charitable home for orphans and invalids.
The first attempt made here to create a home for orphans and invalids predates the establishment of constitutional government on this island. In a year we cannot determine, the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) resolved to set up a charitable house to shelter destitute orphans, and this resolution earned the support and praise of the government in mainland Portugal. Some efforts and steps were taken, but this generous and selfless idea never became a reality.
