Mint

Original title: Hortelã

Mint (Mentha viridis and M. silvestris), grown in Madeiran gardens; spearmint leaves are used to flavour milk.

The common name of Mentha viridis and M. silvestris, plants of the family Labiatae, the first of which appears to be native. Leaves of M. viridis steeped in milk give it a distinctive flavour. Both species are grown in Madeiran vegetable gardens, although M. silvestres is much less common than M. virídis.
