Ivy (Hedera Helix subsp. canariensis)
Original title: Hera (Hedera Helix subesp. canariensis)
Ivy is a common climbing plant in Madeira, used for hedges and wall covering, for dyeing black cloth, and for ropes that bind grape pomace in wine presses.
A plant that climbs by means of short lateral roots. It belongs to the family Araliaceae and is very common in Madeira, where it is used for hedges and to cover walls. Ivy water is used for washing and dyeing black fabrics. The so-called ivy ropes are made not from the fibres but from the slender, flexible branches of the plant. It is with these ropes that the grape pomace is customarily bound in the wine presses.
