Hera-terrestre (Sibthorpia peregrina)
Sibthorpia peregrina, called hera-terrestre in Madeira, is a common creeping plant used as an expectorant; it is distinct from true ground ivy, absent from the island.
A plant of the Scrophulariaceae, subfamily Antirrhinoideae, with stems that root at the nodes; hairy, orbicular-reniform leaves; and small yellow or white corollas with 5 to 8 lobes. It is very common in Madeira, where it is frequently used as an expectorant. In Seixal (‘pebble shore’) this plant is called herva redonda. True ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea) is a plant of the Labiatae family which is not found in Madeira, not even in cultivation.
