Note on the Frasão (Frazão) family in Madeira, descended from Pedro Frazão (fl. 1532), and the characteristic surname of the Count of Calçada.
The family descends,’ say the notes to the Saudades, ‘from Pedro Frazão, who was living on the island of Madeira around 1532 and married Maria de Gouveia, by whom he had Dona Francisca Frazão, who in 1581 married Diogo de Ornelas e Vasconcelos.’ The name Frasão was the characteristic surname of the Count of Calçada (‘paved way’) and of many of his ancestors.
