Vernacular name for several Madeiran thistles of the daisy family, used as livestock fodder.
The Madeiran plants known by this name belong to the daisy family (Compositae) and to the genera Cynara, Silybum, Galactites, Carthamus, Centaurea and Scolymus. While young, or after suitable preparation, thistles serve as fodder for livestock.
