Artillery battery

History of the permanent artillery force stationed in Madeira since 23 June 1877, which was successively renamed as a garrison and then a mountain artillery battery.
Since 23 June 1877 there has been a permanent artillery force in Madeira. Its first commander was Captain Henrique de Lima e Cunha, who held the post until 20 January 1878. Before then the island was garrisoned by artillery detachments sent from Portugal.
The original No. 3 Garrison Artillery Company was renamed No. 3 Garrison Artillery Battery (Bataria n.º 3 de Artilharia de Guarnição) on 1 January 1902, and No. 3 Mountain Artillery Battery (Bataria n.º 3 de Artilharia de Montanha) on 30 June 1911.
