Note on the surname Arnao or Arnau, thought to derive from the Englishman Guilherme Arnau who came to Portugal in 1378; the name is believed extinct in Madeira.

The surname Arnao or Arnau appears to derive from the Englishman Guilherme Arnau, who in 1378 accompanied Philippa of Lancaster, wife of John I, to Portugal. We do not know, however, when this surname appeared in Madeira, and we believe that it is now completely extinct here.
