Peres (Damião)

Damião Peres, Lisbon-born historian who taught at and headed the Funchal lyceum and wrote 'A Madeira sob os donatarios' (1914) on early Madeiran history.

He was born in Lisbon on 8 July 1889. For some years he was a teacher at the Funchal lyceum (state secondary school), and its rector, and he is at present a professor in the Faculty of Letters of Porto. Besides the works he published on John I and on Portugal e o Schisma, in 1914 he brought out in Funchal a pamphlet entitled A Madeira sob os donatarios, which is of considerable interest for the history of this archipelago in the period up to the beginning of Philippine rule on this island (see II-100).

He is the author of important historical studies, among which his Historia de Portugal stands out.
