Perestrelo
The Perestrelo family, descended from Bartolomeu Perestrelo, first donatary and settler of Porto Santo, of Lombard origin; the entry describes its coat of arms.
This is a very old family surname here, for it descends from Bartolomeu Perestrelo, the first donatary and settler of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). He was the son of Filipone or Felipe Perestrelo, whom the genealogies record as having come to Portugal at the end of the 14th century. Filipone was a native of Piacenza, in Lombardy, and the son of Gabriel Perestrelo, a fidalgo (nobleman of the lesser nobility) of lineage whose privileges were recognised in our country. The arms of this family are described thus: ‘shield party per pale; in the first, on a field of gold, a lion purpure armed gules; in the second, on a field of silver, a bend azure charged with three eight-pointed stars between six tosas gules, three and three in pale; crest the lion of the shield, with a star on its shoulder’.
