Aguiar
The Aguiar surname, one of Madeira's oldest, begun by Diogo Afonso de Aguiar, who married a daughter of Zarco.
This is a very old surname on this island. The first to bear it here was Diogo Afonso de Aguiar, one of the four noblemen sent by Afonso V to marry the daughters of João Gonçalves Zarco. Some genealogists say he was the son of José Afonso de Aguiar, first treasurer of the Lisbon mint, and others that he was the son of Pedro de Aguiar. One of his brothers, named Pedro Afonso de Aguiar, was chief outfitter of the fleet of the Kingdom (reino, i.e. mainland Portugal) and a commander of the Order of Christ. Diogo Afonso de Aguiar married Dona Isabel Gonçalves da Câmara, Zarco’s third daughter; Henrique Henriques de Noronha states in the nobiliary (book of noble genealogies) that ‘the dowry that I saw was drawn up in the year 1439’. He was the father of Rui Dias de Aguiar and of Dom Nuno de Aguiar, Bishop of Ceuta and Tangier (see those entries). The Aguiars bore as their arms an eagle displayed on a red field ornamented with black, and also another eagle.
