Afonso
Afonso is an old Madeiran family surname, borne by early settlers and by founders of chapels and benefactors of the Misericórdia.
A very old family surname here in Madeira. João Afonso, of whom we speak below, was one of the earliest settlers of this island. At the beginning of the 16th century, Martim Afonso and his wife Isabel Afonso founded the chapel of Anjos (Angels) in the parish of Canhas. Earlier still, in 1483, one Álvaro Afonso had donated the land for the building of the Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy, a lay charitable brotherhood).
