Wealthy Porto da Cruz landowner of the Leal family, first commander of the Madeira National Guard caçadores battalion and vice-president of the Constitutional Municipal Commission in 1834. He served as civil governor of the Funchal district, refused the title of Viscount of Porto da Cruz, and was father of João Baptista de Freitas Leal.
