Tristão Vaz
navigator · donatary captain
Tristão Vaz was the companion of João Gonçalves Zargo in the discovery of Madeira and became first captain-donatary of Machico in 1440. The Elucidário argues that he never bore the surname Teixeira, which came to his descendants from his wife Branca Teixeira.
