Nicolau Caetano de Bettencourt Pita

Nicolau Caetano de Bettencourt Pita (1788–1857) was a Funchal-born physician trained at Edinburgh. He wrote an 1812 account of Madeira's climate and founded the Patriota Funchalense, Madeira's first newspaper. A committed liberal, he was condemned in 1823 and exiled to Terceira, where he worked as a military and civil doctor until his death.
