Queima de Documentos Constitucionais

Having requested the judge of the people to the Municipal Council of Funchal, on September 29, 1833, to collect and publicly burn 'as unworthy and shameful acts of a faithful people' all the documents and orders issued by the Constitutional Government, this petition was granted by the same Council, and the burning ceremony took place on October 4 of that year, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, in the presence of many people and the military corps of the 1st and 2nd lines. The burned documents, according to the Pregador Imparcial, were 'the minutes of the elections and all other autographs and proxies of the substitute deputies', and after the ceremony, the judge of the people raised some cheers for D. João VI, the absolute king, which were warmly echoed by the people.
