Pereira (Pyrus communis, sebesp. sativa)
European Rosacea-Pomoidea, widely cultivated in Madeira, and also found on the island of Porto Santo. Its fruits vary greatly in both shape and taste; the most well-known are those commonly designated by the following names: peras-bergamotas, caniças, condes, flamengas, francesas, carvalhais, de S. João, marmelas, formigas, brancas, and saramanhas. The last two pears and the caniças are the most sought after for preserves. In Porto Santo, only the pêra-caniça exists.
