Degraded / Degredados

During the time of absolute government, it was customary to deport certain criminals to Madeira whose offenses were not considered very serious by the courts. Joaquim Pedro Cardoso Casado Giraldes (see this name) was deported to Madeira for serving as an interpreter to the French and Spanish generals during the Peninsular War, and there is an official letter from José Lucio Travassos Valdez, dated May 25, 1827, in which this governor and captain-general points out the inconveniences of deporting convicts sentenced to public works to this island.
