Royal Volunteers of Dom Pedro

Original title: Voluntários Reais de D. Pedro

A 400-strong infantry battalion raised in Funchal from June 1828 under governor Travassos Valdez, with an attached cavalry company; it dispersed when Miguelist troops landed in Madeira.

A battalion of this name existed in Funchal in the time of the governor José Lúcio Travassos Valdez, later Count of Bonfim. It consisted of 400 infantrymen, and enlistment began on 26 June 1828. Attached to the battalion was a cavalry company, which was supposed to have 64 men but only ever reached half that strength, and that only tolerably mounted. The Royal Volunteers of Dom Pedro dispersed when the Miguelist troops landed in Madeira.
