Forced labour
Original title: Trabalhos Forçados
Describes the penalty of forced labour on state works imposed by Funchal courts, with convicts chained at the legs by irons made at the municipal council's expense.
The penalty of forced labour on state works was imposed in certain cases on criminals who appeared before the Funchal courts. The convicts had iron chains fastened to their legs by a ring. These chains were made on the orders of the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal), as can be inferred from a resolution passed at its session of 9 November 1824.
