Tintureira (Rhamnus latifolia)

Original title: Tintureira (Rhamrms latifoUa)

Rhamnus latifolia, a native buckthorn extinct in the wild in Madeira but surviving in Monte quintas, also called ginjeira brava.

A native tree of the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), now completely extinct in the uplands of Madeira. It is found in some quintas of Monte (‘hill’), and is recognised by its elliptic, acuminate, almost hairless leaves, with parallel, evenly spaced lateral veins, and by its small, yellowish, stalked, axillary flowers. It is also known as ginjeira brava and yields brownish or reddish wood, hard and even-grained.
