Sanguinho (Rhamnus glandulosa)
Rare native tree of the buckthorn family whose pale wood was once used for inlay.
A tree of the family Rhamnaceae with ovate or ovate-oblong serrated leaves, usually bearing 2 to 4 small glands or projections on the lower part of the upper surface. It has small greenish-yellow flowers arranged in short axillary clusters, and is found in the Serra do Seixal (‘pebble shore’) and between Lamaceiros (‘mud flats’) and Ribeiro Frio (‘cold brook’). It yields a pale, even-grained wood, formerly used for inlaid work (embutidos), but today unknown to the great majority of cabinetmakers, because it is very rare.
