This family surname, now extinct in Madeira, began with Manuel Afonso de Sanha, who founded the chapel of Bom Jesus (Good Jesus) at Ponta Delgada (‘slender point’) and there established an entail (morgado) on the lands of Ribeiro do Peso (‘weighhouse brook’) and Ribeira do Inferno (‘hell’s stream’).
