Sousa (Francisco de)
Madeiran-born royal factor in Funchal, author of a 1570 treatise on the New Islands and the settlement of Newfoundland, printed in Ponta Delgada in 1877 and 1884.
In 1877 a pamphlet was published in the city of Ponta Delgada (‘slender point’) with the following title: Tratado das Ilhas Novas e do descobrimento d'ellas e outras cousas feito por Francisco de Sousa, feitor d'el-rei Nosso Senhor na Capitania da cidade do Funchal na ilha da Madeira. . . e dos portugueses que forâo de Vianna e das ilhas dos Açores a povoar a terra nova do bacalhau. .. Anno do Senhor 1570. A second edition of this booklet was produced in Ponta Delgada in 1884. The author of this pamphlet, a royal factor (feitor) in the captaincy of Funchal, was a native of this island.
