Society for the Protection of Domestic Animals

An animal-welfare society founded in Funchal in 1897 and declared of public utility in 1914; an earlier society of the same name was set up in 1880.

It was founded on 6 January 1897 and legalised by royal decree (alvará) of 6 May of the same year, and it was declared of public utility by decree of 16 March 1914. It has benefactor and subscribing members; the subscriptions, originally 10 centavos, have been raised to 50 centavos (1921).

There was another society of the same name, which was set up in the Hotel Miles, in Rua do Carmo (‘Carmel’), on 1 March 1880.
