Madeira Agricultural Union
Original title: Sindicato Agrícola da Madeira
A farmers' association, the Sindicato Agrícola da Madeira, installed in Funchal in May 1922. Apart from its founding it showed little activity, though it was represented on the administrative council of the 9th Agricultural Region station.
A newspaper of this city reported on 7 May 1922 that the Madeira Agricultural Union (Sindicato Agrícola da Madeira), having been duly approved, had just been installed, and it gave the list of the citizens elected to the syndicate’s general assembly, board of directors and supervisory board. The same newspaper added that the Syndicate had benefactor, founding, full and subscribing members. The first class comprised those who gave a sum of more than 100.00 escudos (the Portuguese currency from 1911: 1 escudo = 100 centavos = 1,000 réis) or performed acts of recognised worth and usefulness; the second, those who paid the entrance fee of 10.00 escudos and the monthly subscription of 50 centavos; the third, those who paid the entrance fee of 5.00 escudos and were also liable for the subscription of 50 centavos; and the last, those who paid the annual subscription of 2.40 escudos in monthly instalments.
After the report we have mentioned, the Madeira Agricultural Union gave no further sign of life, although it has been represented on the administrative council of the station of the 9th Agricultural Region, in accordance with article 31 of the decree of 3 April 1922 (1922).

The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
