Silva (Clemente de Freitas da)

Clemente de Freitas da Silva was a municipal secretary, solicitor and journalist who founded the Ponta do Sol newspaper Brado d'Oeste.

He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’) on 25 November 1859 and died in the town (vila) of Ponta do Sol (‘point of the sun’) on 16 March 1917. He was secretary of the municipal councils of São Vicente (‘St Vincent’) and Porto Moniz (‘Moniz’s harbour’), and secretary of the Municipal Administration (Administração do Concelho, the government's local civil office) of the municipality (concelho) of Ponta do Sol. He distinguished himself greatly as a solicitor (solicitador) and licensed advocate (advogado provisionista, practising by licence without a law degree), leaving valuable legal works that many distinguished jurists would not have disdained to sign. He contributed extensively to many newspapers and was the founder and editor of the Brado d'Oeste (‘Cry from the West’), which was published for many years in the town of Ponta do Sol.
