In the parish (freguesia) of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’), not far from the town (vila) of the same name, lies the Lombada de São Pedro (‘St Peter’s ridge’), or Lombada de Santa Cruz. It is crossed by the stream likewise called São Pedro, more commonly known as the Ribeira da Boaventura (‘Boaventura stream’). In the early 16th century João Escorcio Drumond had a chapel built there, dedicated to the apostle St Peter. The great flash flood (aluvião) of 9 October 1803 razed it completely, and shortly afterwards it was rebuilt on a site less exposed to the violence of the current.

Chronology
  • João Escórcio Drumond built the chapel of São Pedro on the Lombada de São Pedro, Santa Cruz.
  • The great flood of 9 October 1803, considered Madeira's greatest calamity, devastated Funchal and other parts of the island, killing about 600 people and destroying the Calhau church, stream walls, bridges and chapels in Machico, Santa Cruz and elsewhere. It prompted Oudinot's mission and the city's spread outwards.
