Santana e Vasconcelos Moniz de Bettencourt (João de)

Provedor and long-serving administrator of Porto Santo (1806–1874), briefly interim civil governor, author of the Porto Santo municipal annals.

He was born in Funchal in 1806. On 9 August 1834 he was appointed superintendent (provedor) of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), later becoming municipal administrator (administrador do concelho, the government's representative) of the same island, a post he held for many years. He was also interim Civil Governor of the district of Funchal from 8 to 18 January 1862. He wrote the ‘Annals of the Municipality of Porto Santo’ (Anais do Município do Porto Santo), the original of which is held in the archive of that municipality, and he was one of the men who rendered the greatest services to that island. He died in Funchal on 22 June 1874.
