Municipal administrators

Short note on the municipal administrators (administradores do concelho), first appointed in 1835, and their predecessors the provedores; the first provedor of Funchal took office in 1834.
The first municipal administrators (administradores do concelho) were appointed in 1835, but before them there were the provedores, who performed the same duties as the administrators. The first municipal overseer (provedor do concelho, government-appointed head of a municipality, 1834–35) of the municipality (concelho) of Funchal was Januário Cardoso de Melo, who took up the post on 16 August 1834.
