Salviati

Entry on the Salviati family, descended from the Florentine João Salviati, who took refuge in Madeira around 1478 after a conspiracy against the Medici. His descendants, who held land at Câmara de Lobos, took the surname Florença.

This family surname, says the annotator of ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra), ‘derives from João Salviati, a native of Florence, who, being implicated in a conspiracy against the Medici, took refuge on the island of Madeira around 1478. Here he married Isabel Alvares de Abreu, and held land by sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) at Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’), above the Ribeira dos Socorridos, close to the sea. His descendants took the surname Florença’.
