Abreu (family)
Original title: Abreu
The Abreu family in Madeira, descended from Brites de Abreu and João Fernandes do Arco.
The first person on this island who appears to have used this surname was Brites or Beatriz de Abreu, daughter of Rui de Abreu, alcaide-mor (royal governor of a castle and town) of Elvas. She married João Fernandes do Arco, so called because he held extensive sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands in Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’), and of whom we shall speak in a separate article. Their sons took their mother’s surname, and some of them distinguished themselves in Africa and India. Among the daughters were the celebrated Isabel de Abreu (see that entry) and Águeda de Abreu, wife of João Esmeraldo, the owner of the Lombada da Ponta do Sol (‘ridge of Ponta do Sol’). To this family belonged António de Abreu, the discoverer of the Moluccas (see that entry).
