Sá (José Correia de)

Governor and captain-general of Madeira (1759–67) who carried out the arrest and expulsion of the Jesuits under Pombal's orders.

His appointment as governor and captain-general (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira) of Madeira is dated 17 May 1758, and he took office on 27 May 1759. It was this governor who ordered the arrest and shipping out of the Jesuits on this island, and the sequestration and leasing of their property, in accordance with the orders issued by the Marquis of Pombal. He served until October 1767.
