Pomegranate (Punica Granatum)
Original title: Romeira (Punica Granatum)
The pomegranate tree, cultivated in São Martinho, Santo António and elsewhere in Madeira, and valued for medicinal uses of its flowers, fruit rind and bark.
A small tree or shrub of the family Punicaceae, cultivated in São Martinho, Santo António and other parts of Madeira. An infusion of the unopened flowers or of the fruit rind of this species is used as a gargle against quinsy. The root bark of the pomegranate tree is one of the most effective vermifuges against tapeworm; the bark of the trunk and branches also has taenifuge properties, though weaker than those of the root.
