Rocha de Gouveia (Gabriel)

Biography of Gabriel Rocha de Gouveia (1887–1917), a Madeiran agronomy student who served as a second lieutenant in France in the First World War and was killed in the trenches.

He was born at Arco da Calheta (‘arc of Calheta’) on 30 September 1887, the son of Manuel Rocha de Gouveia and Dona Maria Augusta Soares Rocha de Gouveia. He was studying agronomy in Lisbon when he was called up to the army after Germany declared war on Portugal. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he left for France, where he met his death on 13 October 1917 while on duty in the trenches. It is said that he was chatting carelessly with other officers when he was struck by several shell splinters, which killed him instantly.
