Processions
Original title: Procissões
Introductory note to a compound entry gathering notes on various religious processions in Funchal, some discontinued and others still held with altered ceremonial. It records that under absolutism the corregedor and juiz de fora received fees for city processions, a custom apparently ended with constitutional government.
The account that follows gathers a number of notes on various processions, some of which are no longer held, while others still take place, though with a ceremonial different from that of the past. It is curious to note that, in the days of absolutism, the corregedor (royal district magistrate) and the juiz de fora (crown-appointed judge from outside the district) received perquisites (propinas) for the processions that went out in the city. This custom disappeared, we believe, with the establishment of constitutional government on this island.
