Procession of St Francis
Original title: Procissão de S. Francisco
Procession in honour of Saint Francis held in Funchal in the early nineteenth century, saluted by the São Lourenço guns, probably leaving the Franciscan convent.
In the early 19th century a procession was held in honour of St Francis, as can be seen from an order of the captain-general (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira) instructing that ‘a salute be given from the upper stronghold of São Lourenço to the procession of St Francis... and that only those guns be fired that have been ordered, so that they do no harm to the house or the fishpond’.
It is likely that the procession left the Convent of São Francisco (St Francis of Assisi), which stood on the site now occupied by the Jardim Municipal (‘municipal garden’).
