Procession of St Anthony

Original title: Procissão de Santo António

Procession in honour of Saint Anthony that left Funchal Cathedral in the early nineteenth century, with three portable platforms carried by canons, Franciscan friars and choirboys; the municipal council accompanied it.

We have found references to this procession, which left the church of the Sé, Funchal Cathedral (Sé), in documents from the beginning of the second quarter of the 19th century. It included three processional litters (andores): one with St Anthony of Padua as a canon, another with St Anthony as a friar, and a third with St Anthony as a choirboy. These litters were carried, respectively, by canons of the Sé, Franciscan friars and choirboys of the Cathedral. The minutes of the session of the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) of 13 June 1815 show that the municipality accompanied the procession of St Anthony.

Chronology
