Piedade
Monte Gordo or Piedade, a seaward height in Caniçal parish crowned by the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, a landmark for ships, said to have been founded in the 16th century by Garcia Moniz.
Overlooking the sea in the parish (freguesia) of Caniçal (‘reed bed’) rises a height known as Monte Gordo (‘fat hill’) or Piedade (‘pity’). On its summit stands out the chapel of Our Lady of Pity (Nossa Senhora da Piedade), which ships approaching the coast can see from a great distance. It is said to have been founded in the 16th century by Garcia Moniz, the first administrator (administrador do concelho, government-appointed head of the municipality) of the entail (morgado) of Caniçal. Ownership later passed to the entailed house (casa vinculada) of São Gil (‘St Giles’), whose manor house stood in the locality of Calçada (‘paved way’), in the parish of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’).
- The Piedade chapel on Monte Gordo, Caniçal, is said to have been founded by Garcia Moniz.
