Pereira de Sousa (Francisco Luís)
Original title: Pereira de Sousa (Francisco Luis)
Biography of Francisco Luís Pereira de Sousa (1870–1931), Funchal-born army engineer and Lisbon university professor, regarded as Portugal's leading authority on seismology, notably for his studies of the 1755 earthquake.
He was born in Funchal on 28 September 1870, the son of the distinguished Madeiran writer Francisco Clementino de Sousa. Having enlisted in the army on 3 November 1888, he was commissioned second lieutenant of engineers on 25 October 1894, after studying with great distinction at the former Polytechnic and Army Schools. He was a professor in the 3rd section (natural sciences) of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Universidade de Lisboa) and a member of the Mineralogical Society of France and other scientific bodies. He devoted himself especially to geological, mineralogical and seismological studies, and in the last of these he was the foremost authority in our country. His research on the effects of the earthquake of 1755 is truly remarkable, not only from the scientific but also from the historical point of view. Works:
