Peregrinações Madeirenses
Two organised pilgrimages from Madeira to European shrines, monuments and museums in 1923 and 1926, each later described in print.
Under the name ‘Peregrinações Madeirenses’ (Madeiran Pilgrimages), two excursions took place in 1923 and 1926 in which several hundred people from this archipelago took part, visiting the most celebrated shrines, monuments and museums in various countries of Europe. Father Jacinto da C. Nunes published an interesting description of the first in a score of articles in the review A Esperança (‘Hope’) in 1924 and 1925. Of the second, the well-known writer João dos Reis Gomes published a detailed account entitled Através da França, Suíça e Itália, an exquisite and instructive travel book.
